Dental Implants

South of Adelaide

Dental implants may be an option for people that have lost a tooth or teeth. Whether you need to replace a single tooth or a complete set of teeth, implants look, feel and function like natural teeth.

They are a reliable option that can restore original function and comfort and achieve excellent aesthetics.

Dental implants are an artificial tooth root fabricated from a very strong biocompatible material (made of titanium), which are surgically placed in the jawbone where teeth are missing.

Through a process called “osseointergration” the jawbone actually attaches itself to the implant over time, providing stability. This process takes between three to six months.

Once osteointegration has occurred, smaller posts called abutments are screwed into the implant and then the crown or denture are securely attached to the abutment.

Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and with combination of good daily oral hygiene and  regular checkups (every 6 months) the implants success rate will be high.

Since the implant is inserted into the jaw, the adjacent teeth are not affected, damaged, or cut in any way.

Implants behave exactly like the roots of our own teeth serving to stimulate the bone and preserve it.

Implants stabilise loose dentures. Patients who have had dentures for a long time, usually complain that they are loose and cannot bite onto hard and crunchy food.

The success rate for dental implants is the highest of any form of dentistry. Our body recognizes titanium in the same way as it does a tooth.  Once this integration occurs, there are normally no complications if proper oral hygiene and regular checkups are maintained.

Regardless of the age, almost anybody who has lost one or more teeth can benefit from having a dental implant. There are techniques available even for patients who have lost substantial amounts of bone.

Most patients say that the procedure is much easier and better than expected. There may be some discomfort afterwards depending on the number of implants placed. This is controlled by pain relievers.

There has now been over thirty years of research showing that implant treatment is safe and reliable.

At O’Halloran Hill Dental we are excited to offer this advanced dental restoration to our patients. We ensure a meticulous approach to implant treatment. It is an important part of our commitment to help our patients to keep a healthy, functioning mouth.

Frequently asked questions about dental implants in Adelaide

With proper dental hygiene and regular dental check-ups (6 to 9 months apart) dental implants can last a lifetime, making it an excellent long-term option for smile restoration.

If you are considering implant surgery but are worried about how painful the procedure will be you aren’t alone.

This is one of dental implant candidate’s most common fears. Dental implant surgery is performed by making an incision in the gum, then the implant is embedded into the jawbone using a screw.

Afterward, the incision in the gums is closed with stitches. All of this sounds painful. However, pain during dental implant surgery is minimum to none. A local anaesthetic will be used so you will be awake during the surgery.

If you are nervous about the surgery, your dentist can give you a mild sedative. With either option, pain during the procedure is unlikely.

Most patients report post surgery pain. However the pain is not severe, and your dentist will most likely prescribe over the counter pain relievers. In the first 24-48 hours swelling will begin to subside and you might notice a small amount of bleeding which is normal.

Mild pain and discomfort shouldn’t last longer than a week. After dental implant surgery, the bone and surrounding structures will take between three to six months to fully heal. During this time the jawbone will form around the implant increasing the implants sturdiness.

The advantages of dental implants are many which is why they are such a popular option.

  • They look and feel like natural teeth.
  • They are permanent since they are fused to your bone.
  • They allow for proper speech since they won’t slide around like dentures which is a common problem for people that wear dentures.
  • They are comfortable because they are fused to the bone and unmovable. Which essentially makes them a part of you.
  • With dentures eating certain foods is difficult. That is not an issue with dental implants. They function as well as your natural teeth.
  • Your confidence is restored because your oral health will be much improved and your smile will be completely intact.
  • They are durable and will last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance.

You care for dental implants the same as you would your natural teeth. Brushing, flossing, mouthwash and regular dental check-ups are all a part of proper dental implant care.

Like any other surgery, complications are possible but are rare. The specific risk factors are: Infection. Damage or injury to other teeth or blood vessels.

Nerve damage. Sinus problems if an upper jaw implant protrudes into the sinus cavity. But once again, these complications are unlikely to result from your dental implant surgery.
